Essex wins 2018 SEG County League Final
Having won their respective leagues over the summer, the teams from Essex and Hampshire met in the final which was played at Frilford Heath (Red Course) on Sunday 7th October 2018.
The weather, which had been cold and wet for the practice rounds on Saturday, was fine but a little cold. The greens were in good condition and the day was set up nicely for some good golf. We were not to be disappointed.
Essex took a commanding lead by winning the morning foursomes 3.5 to 0.5. Hampshire, however, were in the mood to fight and they did just that. A very strong start to the afternoon saw the first two matches go to Hampshire, both with scores of 4 & 3. Essex took the third and fifth matches and the fourth was halved. So with five matches completed, Essex were leading 6 – 3 and only needed a half to win the trophy. Match six was won by Hampshire as was match eight meaning that everything turned on match seven – which went to the eighteenth hole.
On the eighteenth green Taylor Carter of Essex was left with a testing putt to finish all square against Sam Parsons. The putt was holed and Essex won 6.5 to 5.5.
This was an excellent final played in the usual perfect spirit by two teams of exceptional talent. Well done to all the players and congratulations to Essex.
